A solid start

26.05.2008 | Tennis

Roger started his French Open campaign convincingly today with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Sam Querrey.

"It's always difficult in the first round at Grand Slams," Roger said. "I'm relieved and I'm looking forward to the second round."

Roger will now face Albert Montanes of Spain or Belgium's Kristof Vliegen for a place in the third round as he seeks to complete a career Grand Slam. He was rarely troubled in his opening match, facing a break in the first set but recording two breaks of his own against the Querrey delivery to move a set up.

He then showed solid tennis with some occasional brilliant shots and was able to wrap up the victory in just over an hour and a half.

I just posted a comment that didn't show up. If it did, please ignore.

Shell, thanks for the info about Andy Murray and the school shooting-- I had no idea! Poor guy. As I said before, I'm glad I didn't criticize him.

For you fans, I did watch th

Hi Rogerholics friends
I was delayed (not rain) and saw 2 aces and that cross-court last point. How did Roger look today?

You're doing more then Great!!! Such a calm energy and i feel just as calm as you are :):).
Such a nice feeling..
With a break behind and the rain falling harder out of the sky, to stay with that inner calmness...so strong. My outmost respect

Montanes reached QF in Barcelona and Hamburg, so he is a good clay court player.

Bonjour Zing,

Just to tell you again how cute your little French sentences were yesterday. You must have been the 'chouchou' of your teacher in your school days...

Thanks guys for your comments on Roger's game so far. Yeah, just by looking at live score I could tell that Roger was making unforced errors, I thought he was not settled yet.

Wish this rain is a blessing from above.
God Bless you Roger as always.

Hi people,

Roger seems to be easing his way into the match, Montanes on the other hand is playing to his max of his abilities. It's still 5-5 and Roger seems content to keep the ball in court which is probably allowing his opponent to go for his shots

For Canadians, TSN is showing the beginning of the Roger match now.

hello fans

please be very concentraded because
montanes is a spaniard and they are always
dangerous on the clay and roger must stop
to making much unforced errors because
if he does this will kill him.....
he must be alert of these stop volleys

We saw very little of the match because they showed Nadal most of the time. But Montanes did play some nice shots.

I hope Roger will do as he often does, feel and figure out his opponent during the first set and then win over him.
