Wimbledon

21.06.2004 | Tennis

The score for Roger is 6:2, 6:3, 4:3 in the semi-finals against France’s Sebastien Grosjean in Wimbledon. Unfortunately the match had to be interrupted due to rain and will be continued on Saturday. Only the rain was able to stop Roger in his quarter final in Wimbledon, and just for a short period of time. Lleyton Hewitt only managed to challenge Roger in the second set which had to be interrupted twice. The 2003 champion showed a strong performance against the winner of 2002, beating him 6:1, 6:7, 6:0 and 6:4. The result is just the more impressive knowing that Hewitt did not play badly at all. He only booked two unforced errors in the set he lost 1:6.

Roger’s encounter with Lleyton Hewitt startet late today and had to be paused during the 2nd set. Rain set in after Kroatia’s Mario Ancic had eliminated Britain’s hope Tim Henman. The score before the break was Federer - Hewitt: 6:1, 6:6.

Roger is absolutely on course for defending his title in Wimbledon. He defeatet Ivo Karlovic in round four (Croatia, ATP 62) 6:3, 7:6 (7:3), 7:6 (7:5) in 110 minutes. Roger’s next opponent for the quarter finals will now be Lleyton Hewitt. The game was certainly not one of Roger’s most spectacular ones. But this was mostly due to Karlovic who – apart from his enormous serve – was rather limited but did not allow any rhythm in Roger’s game. But Roger did not let himself get frustrated by the service-thunderstorms of his 208 cm tall opponent and won the important points.

Roger is in the fourth round in Wimbledon! His 6:3, 6:4 and 6:3 victory was clear and meant yet another round for Roger without losing a set. His next opponent is either Feliciano Lopez or Ivo Karlovic who had beat the former Wimbledon champion in the first round last year. Thomas Johansson certainly fought harder than Alex Bogdanovic and Alejandro Falla in the two earlier rounds but he was also not capable of really getting Roger into trouble. Our champion of last year showed a very confident performance for his 20th victory in a row on grass.

And yet again rain has stopped all the action in Wimbledon. Play will continue tomorrow on the Middle Sunday.

Roger has made it to the third round of the Grand-Slam tournament in Wimbledon. Beating Columbia’s qualifier Alejandro Falla 6:1, 6:2, 6:0 took Roger a mere 54 minutes. The opponent for the coming round will be Sweden’s Thomas Johansson, ATP ranking 123.

After a very rainy day in Wimbledon play is taking place on all scheduled courts again today. Roger will meet Columbia’s Alejandro Falla on Court 1 in the evening.
