Halle, the 2nd

12.06.2004 | Tennis

Roger sent out a warning to his Wimbledon rivals by defeating sixth-seeded American Mardy Fish 6-0, 6-3 in the final of the Halle Open today. Fish, ranked 23 in the world, never got into the match as the Wimbledon and Australian Open champion broke him three times in the first set and once in the second to retain the title he won last year and extend his winning run on grass to 17 matches. "I have played really well here in the last few years," the 22-year-old said. "For me it's fantastic that I was able to end the tournament in this way. Being able to dominate the match of course is very, very comfortable." Roger is on the best way to defending his title in the tournament in Halle, Germany. After a two set victory (6:3, 7:5) against France’s Arnaud Clément Roger will now play Jiri Novak, last year’s winner in Gstaad. For Roger it was already the third victory this year against Clément who lives in Geneva (ATP 37). The rather small player (1m72) tried to prevent Roger’s 15th victory on grass in series but did not manage to achieve one single break-chance. Roger played excellently during 71 minutes and waited patiently for his opportunities. In the two games offering break chances he seized the moment each time.
