Roger Receives ITWA Award

16.01.2004 | Off Court

Roger has been named as the International Tennis Writers Association's Player of the Year for 2003, while Moroccan YOUNES EL AYNAOUI received the ASAP Best Ambassador of the Sport of Tennis award. Roger received the honour after close competition from ANDY RODDICK and JUAN CARLOS FERRERO. "Roger's impeccable performance at Wimbledon, his astounding title run at the year-end Tennis Masters Cup and his overall fine play on all surfaces gave him the edge over Roddick," said ITWA President Richard Evans. Meanwhile, ANDRE AGASSI, PARADORN SRICHAPHAN, GUSTAVO KUERTEN, CARLOS MOYA, JAMES BLAKE and ROGER FEDERER all received votes for "Best Ambassador," but it was El Aynaoui who came out on top in the category, which recognizes cooperative players who spend the most time attempting to work with the media in order to promote the sport to the public. "El Aynaoui is always ready to present himself as a willing ambassador of his sport even in the most demanding circumstances," said Evans. "After losing that extraordinary five-hour battle with Roddick at the Australian Open, Younes did his press conference and then answered questions in four of the six languages he speaks fluently. Physically and mentally he must have been exhausted but he went far above and beyond the call of duty."
