Next up: Richard Gasquet

Roger was given a stern test before overcoming Olivier Rochus at the Indian Wells Masters Series on Tuesday.

The world number one looked out of sorts as his Belgian opponent made a blistering start, taking the first set.

And despite levelling at one-set all, Roger remained on edge throughout and had to save numerous break points in the decider before winning 3-6 6-2 7-5.

"You can't be ready to win in straight sets, otherwise you're badly prepared," said Roger, who needed nearly two hours to improve to 18-1 this season. "I always expect a tough one and this one was. I never got my game going, and once you're down a set, you're not allowed to make any more mistakes. I'm relieved I'm through."

His victory set up a fourth-round match with Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who eliminated Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 6-3 6-4, earlier at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
