Roger survived a big scare today against the unseeded Robin Soderling before extending his winning streak on grass to 25 matches in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open. Roger edged 20-year-old Soderling 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in 2 hours, 20 minutes in his first match on grass this year. On a cold, overcast day, Roger twice came within two points of losing on grass for the first time since Mario Ancic upset him in the first round of Wimbledon in 2002. With a failing forehand and having trouble breaking Soderling's serve, Roger eluded defeat when trailing 5-4, 30-15 in the second set. He took it to a tiebreaker, where he fell behind 5-4 before winning four of the next five points. The match ended with a double fault by the 57th-ranked Soderling, a former top junior whose first success was reaching Wimbledon's third round two years ago.

Roger will be opening the grass-season against Robin Söderling (ATP 35) in Halle (GER) tomorrow at 2 p.m. CET. Roger won both encounters against the 20 year old Swede last year in Toronto and Bangkok. The moment for a next match against Rafael Nadal - this time on grass - would be the semi-final. Good luck for the start, Roger!
