Cincinnati

16.08.2005 | Tennis

Roger secured his place in the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati with a 7-6(3) 7-5 win over American James Blake.

The top seed took what proved to be a decisive 5-2 tie-break lead after both players held their serve during the first set.

Blake then broke in the second game of the next set and went 3-0 up before Roger supremo won the next three, breaking his opponent back in the fifth. Blake's chances collapsed as he conceded five consecutive points to lose serve before Federer served out the match at 40-30.

It was Roger's first match on the ATP Tour since his Wimbledon victory six weeks ago. «There is certainly still room for improvement and I know I can play better than that - but the performance was already sufficient for a victory in two sets.»

Congratulations on getting to round 2! I think you know this, but the best strategy for this week is basically to win with just enough until it comes time to pull out the stops for the semis and the final. And definitely enjoy yourself! It's the first

Way to pull through against Blake, he's a tough opponent. Kiefer is on the chopping block.
