Ready for the quarter-finals

07.09.2005 | Tennis

Roger dropped his first set in the US Open before defeating Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

"So far in this tournament, I haven't lost a set before", Roger said after the match. "When it happens, you're not ready for it,'' he added. Roger is now 68-3 and unbeaten since the semi-finals at the French Open, having won 32 straight matches on hard courts - moving him ahead of Ivan Lendl and behind only Pete Sampras in the Open era. Roger can break Sampras' record by winning the US Open.

Roger did look vulnerable early against Kiefer whom he'd already beaten three times this year, even tossing his racket once. He next plays 11th-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina, a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-2 victor over Italian Davide Sanguinetti. Roger said before that match he would prefer Nalbandian, "because I have a bad record against him."

Please play like it is a final tonight against Nalbandian, and you will not have any problems. Hewitt is still in his five-set match now and will be waiting for you. We will be cheering for you all the way.

Go, Roger, Go!!!

Dear Roger,

Maybe the match against Kiefer was the only match you have to lose a set. I wish you all the luck of the world against Nalbandian!! You deserve it. You can do it!

Another good thing is that at the end of the day the best male and female players won, you and Kim Clijsters.
Now Nalbandian, man you have to beat hi

Well, well, well, that was certainly your worst match at the US Rogi, there's no doubt... But it's probably because Nicolas isn't that well "suited" to you...

Next up is David, and it's good that you've got such wake up call against Nicolas... The true
