Ready for the quarter-finals
Roger dropped his first set in the US Open before defeating Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
"So far in this tournament, I haven't lost a set before", Roger said after the match. "When it happens, you're not ready for it,'' he added. Roger is now 68-3 and unbeaten since the semi-finals at the French Open, having won 32 straight matches on hard courts - moving him ahead of Ivan Lendl and behind only Pete Sampras in the Open era. Roger can break Sampras' record by winning the US Open.
Roger did look vulnerable early against Kiefer whom he'd already beaten three times this year, even tossing his racket once. He next plays 11th-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina, a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-2 victor over Italian Davide Sanguinetti. Roger said before that match he would prefer Nalbandian, "because I have a bad record against him."
