Ready for the quarter-finals

07.09.2005 | Tennis

Roger dropped his first set in the US Open before defeating Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

"So far in this tournament, I haven't lost a set before", Roger said after the match. "When it happens, you're not ready for it,'' he added. Roger is now 68-3 and unbeaten since the semi-finals at the French Open, having won 32 straight matches on hard courts - moving him ahead of Ivan Lendl and behind only Pete Sampras in the Open era. Roger can break Sampras' record by winning the US Open.

Roger did look vulnerable early against Kiefer whom he'd already beaten three times this year, even tossing his racket once. He next plays 11th-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina, a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-2 victor over Italian Davide Sanguinetti. Roger said before that match he would prefer Nalbandian, "because I have a bad record against him."

Hi Roger

Honestly, that is the worst match I've ever seen you play, Roger. You looked like you weren't there a 100 %. And your dream forehand was gone. Maybe sometimes you should show some more temper.
Alright the last two sets were OK.
Please beat N

A very tough match but u prevailed nonetheless. Well done Roger. I like your positive attitude and with Nalbandian as your next opponent, you need that. Embrace the challenge and good luck!

Ah Roger, you had to drop a set vs. Kiefer again, didn't you now? Well...maybe it's a good omen considering how things turned out in Cincy and especially Wimbledon where you lost the 2nd set tie-break again.
Looks like there is something about his game

Wow, it was such a hard match to watch at times, but yu did it again Roger. I knew you would find a way to win in the end. I just hope that you can go all the way.

See you Sunday. We all hope!!!!

Good work Roger. Never doubted you one bit. You crushed the fella.

Good luck next round against Davide Nalbandian. I'm so confident you'll give him a hiding. The bad record is in the past. Now its the future...
