Racquets Net $40,000 for Victims of Hurricane

20.09.2005 | Off Court

Roger's autographed winning US Open racquet attracted a top bid of $25,665 via an online auction promoted on TennisKatrina.com, a web site established by the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to benefit the American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Coupled with a winning bid of $14,960 for Andre Agassi’s racquet, the two racquets used in the 2005 US Open final netted $40,625.

Memorabilia donated by 2005 women’s US Open champion Kim Clijsters also made a significant contribution to the fundraiser. Clijsters’ racquet used during the Open final was sold for $11,700 and her signed match outfit worn during her final win over Mary Pierce brought $5,100. An autographed racquet donated by fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne also raised $8,207.

Of the auctions still to close, bidding on Serena Williams’ US Open earrings had reached $15,100. Bids may be placed at www.TennisKatrina.com. More than 10,000 fans have visited the web site. By 5 p.m. EST Monday more than $100,000 of tennis memorabilia donated by ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour players had been sold. Additionally, bidding on auctions yet to close stood at almost $27,000. Other autographed items to attract high selling prices included: Lindsay Davenport racquet ($4,550), Rafael Nadal shoes ($4,050), James Blake shoes ($3,850), Serena Williams racquet ($3,050), David Nalbandian shoes ($2,175) and Xavier Malisse shoes ($2,109).

The auction is part of a multi-tiered effort by the sport of tennis to assist those affected in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that struck the southeastern United States in late August.

Its very nice to see that even when you have achieved almost everything, you are aware of the concerns in the society and trying your best to help t

Dear Roger,

How wonderful it is to find, again and again, that all the spotlights shining on you over the last couple of years, never blind you and prevent you from seeing what else needs attention, too! Thank you for co-operating on such a good cause.
