A perfect start for Switzerland

23.09.2005 | Tennis

Switzerland's Davis Cup team took a commanding two-point lead over Britain thanks to opening day wins for Roger and Stanislas Wawrinka on Friday.

Roger quashed Alan Mackin with ease 6:0, 6:0, 6:2 before Stanislas Wawrinka followed that up with a straight sets victory over Andrew Murray 6:3, 7:6 (7:5), 6:4.

"We have not won yet but we are in a great position, said Roger. It makes it an interesting doubles and it is looking good."

Stanislas Wawrinka, who earned his first Davis Cup victory over Murray, agreed with his team-mate. "Being up 2-0 gives us a lot of confidence, said the 20-year-old. Roger and Yves have won titles together so they have a big chance of winning."
