Davis Cup 2006

29.09.2005 | Tennis

Switzerland will be playing Australia in the first round of the 2006 Davis Cup. The encounter will take place on February 10-12.

Switzerland will have the advantage of chosing the surface. The head-to-head against the Aussies is rather negative from the Swiss point of view: 0:3. The first encounter in 1930 ended in a 5:0 victory for the Australians, the other two were a lot closer (2000 in Zürich: 2:3; 2003 in Melbourne: 2:3).

One of the most bitter memories is certainly the Davis Cup semifinal in Melbourne, where Roger suffered one of the most devastating defeats of his career. Only two points short of a three-set victory Hewitt fought back with an immense performance, eventually taking home the match 5-7, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Bonne Chance and Viel Glück to Roger and all the Swiss team! If Roger plays, just remember, he has a bunny - and that bunny's name is Lleyton Hewitt, no matter what surface they play on... :D

Good luck to the Swiss guys!

It would be a great victory for Davis Cup if the world number 1 decides to play. This is what makes Davis Cup so exciting, even if one's own nation is out of the competition: to see the best of every nation compete against each other.

I am intrigued to see if Switzerland take the bait and choose clay. I just think back to Brazil, when lleyton crushed Guga on clay. Roger, my advice is to choose grass. It is Lleyton's best surface, but you have shown that you are just too classy at Wimbl
