Davis Cup Victory

09.02.2004 | Tennis

The first performance of the Allianz Suisse Davis Cup team brought an exciting weekend with a 3:2 victory over Romania. 5000 enthusiastic fans supported their teams in sunny Romania – including 250 Swiss supporters. Roger would like to thank all these fans for their colourful and loud appearance and motivation. Without you the Davis Cup encounters would simply not be the same. THANK YOU! Roger destroyed any doubts of his strong state after a long week with jet-lag and a long five-set match in the doubles on Saturday with an impressive performance in his second singles on Sunday. With his win over Andrei Pavel he increased Switzerland’s lead to 3:1, deciding the victory over Romania. Roger and Yves Allegro had a better start into the doubles than their opponents on Saturday. But then, surprisingly, the Swiss stars started making a fair amount of errors and had to fight for their points. It was Yves’ forehand return-winner in the fifth set which brought the second matchball for Switzerland. Roger then seized the opportunity and ended the game at 10:8 – which will not only stay in Yves Allegro’s memory as a special match! As the encounter had already been decided upon, the 19 year old Stanislas Wawrinka received the opportunity for his first Davis Cup match. The young Swiss showed a great performance against Victor Hanescu, ranked around 100 places ahead of Stanislas, but lost the third set 3:6. The next round will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland on april 9-11 against France. Switzerland has hereby managed to qualify for the quarter finals for the third time in four years. The last three encounters were won by the guest teams. ‘I hope this is now going to change’, explained captain Marc Rosset. Good luck, guys!
