Roger in the final in Shanghai
Roger advanced 6-0, 6-0 over Gaston Gaudio to reach his third consecutive Tennis Masters Cup final with the most comprehensive win ever at the year-ending championships.
Gaudio served a total of nine double faults and won only nine points in the second set against Federer, not making it too hard for Roger. "I am glad to have made all the important points", Roger said after his victory. "It was also surprised to have played so constantly throughout the entire match. I hope my foot can cope with the final - but I'll certainly give all I have - I'll be off on holiday for two and a half weeks after this!".
Roger's 35th consecutive win this Saturday took a mere 49 minutes. His streak is equal fifth in the Open era, level with the marks set by Bjorn Borg in 1978 and Thomas Muster in 1995. Roger has not lost a match on tour since his French Open semifinal defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal on June 3 and is 81-3 for the year. He's now only one win shy of John McEnroe's Open era record (82-3), set in 1984, for the best winning percentage (0.965) in a year.
The 6-0, 6-0 result was a first for Roger on the ATP Tour and the first in the year-end championships. He will now face either seventh-ranked Nikolay Davydenko of Russia or Argentina's David Nalbandian.
