A last victory before the first big tournament

13.01.2006 | Tennis

Roger was given a preview of his potential Australian Open third-round clash when he just squeezed past Mirnyi, leaving his best until the very last before winning 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-1).

"Players like him, they've got great serves, they're great athletes, at the net especially but I think at the same time it's a great challenge to always keep on passing. You're always going to see nice points and always a lot of winners and I enjoy that actually."

He plays unknown wildcard Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the first round of the Australian Open. Roger is really looking forward to the first big tournament this year. "There's obviously nerves always involved and a lot at stake for me."

Dear Roger, You have done what you had to do. You worked hard to prepare this tournament. Now things are set and you are there to collect the fruits of your work and efforts. Let yourself go, be strong and aggressive and play your game. Good luck!!!

Dearest Roger,

Good luck with Australian Open and your young opponent. You have to be fully alert against him because he is unknown to you. I know you have been trying to find out about him and I hope by now you know all about this young man. He says
