Roger meets with Pope

10.05.2006 | Off Court

Roger met briefly with Pope Benedict XVI today, shortly before his second-round match against Potito Starace at the Rome Masters.

The meeting occurred during the Pope's weekly general audience in St Peter's Square. Dressed in a dark shirt and suit, Roger shook the pope's hand - certainly a most impressive experience!

Happy that you could have, with Mirka, a meeting and handshake with the Pope. Some people have become very disrespectful, but that is wrong. No earthly man can be perfect, and at least the Catholic Church stands for something like love, morality, in the modern world. (Now, I would recommend the Dalai Lama, too: a greatly venerated figure, with just reason.)

Dear Roger,

I am not a catholic but I find that gesture impressive. By giving your time and priority to meet with the Pope, the most respected figure of catholics, instead of just minding the tournament showed just how graceful you are in just anything
