Roger right on course
Roger produced an elegant 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Czech Tomas Berdych to stride into the quarter-finals of Roland Garros.
Roger had dropped his first set of the tournament in the previous round against Nicolas Massu and many observers thought rising star Berdych, who beat Roger at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, may also push him hard. However, that was not to be the case.
Roger took the first set in 39 minutes and also raced through the second, twice breaking the Czech's serve. Our favourite dropped his serve for the first time at the start of the third set but soon hit back to secure a straight-sets success.
Roger will next face Mario Ancic (CRO/ ATP 12) in the last eight. Roger has won two of the three encounters with Ancic. But the one match he lost was particularly dramatic: Roger lost against the Croatian in Wimbledon in 2002 in the first round - Ancic being completely unknown at the time.
