Roger defeated by Nadal in thrilling final

11.06.2006 | Tennis

Unfortunately Roger was not able to make a huge tream come true today. He lost to Rafael Nadal at today's final of the French Open: 6-1, 1-6, 4-6, 6-7.

"Rafael totally deserved to win this tournament," Roger said after the match. The Spaniard extended his Roland Garros perfect record to 14-0 and his winning streak on clay to 60 matches, leaving Roger opponent one match shy of becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slams simultaneously.

Roger was in a class of his own in the first set, breaking twice a nervous Nadal. The 20-year-old Spaniard, however, hit back in the second and pocketed the third having saved four break points. He then broke in the first game of the fourth set but Roger needed only one break point to level at 5-5, only for Rafael Nadal to win the tiebreak 7-4 and the match after three hours and two minutes.

You delighted us during the first set. Then, I don't understand what went in your mind; what was missing in the match that you kind of left the court. You proved in Rome you have enough tennis to win on clay. But on Sunday it was a different story. You l

Hi Rogi, sorry but for the firt time ever I'm very disappointed about the way you faced a match. The match. I think you didn't played the right way (like you have done in Rome). I love you, but this time I cannot be proud of you as ever. Not yesterday.
