Roger defeated by Nadal in thrilling final

11.06.2006 | Tennis

Unfortunately Roger was not able to make a huge tream come true today. He lost to Rafael Nadal at today's final of the French Open: 6-1, 1-6, 4-6, 6-7.

"Rafael totally deserved to win this tournament," Roger said after the match. The Spaniard extended his Roland Garros perfect record to 14-0 and his winning streak on clay to 60 matches, leaving Roger opponent one match shy of becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slams simultaneously.

Roger was in a class of his own in the first set, breaking twice a nervous Nadal. The 20-year-old Spaniard, however, hit back in the second and pocketed the third having saved four break points. He then broke in the first game of the fourth set but Roger needed only one break point to level at 5-5, only for Rafael Nadal to win the tiebreak 7-4 and the match after three hours and two minutes.

Hello Roger,

It was sad to watch the finals in which you lost to yourself.

First off, it was not Nadal who beat you. It was your own self. Where was your fighting spirit? Where was your mental strength? Where was your focus?

hi Roger,
Just a few comments form a fan:
1. You have been unable to match Rafa's intensity in any of your matches with him; so even if you're the player with all the shots/options, he's able to get you at the key moments, because he knows you're gonna

I am truly sorry for you. I feel you have the weapons and game plan to beat Nadal. But, I feel after the 1st set, you lost your game plan and then you lost your confidence, and finally, it seemed your mental composure cracked.

The pressure must have b

It's becoming a nightmare for we Roger fans but we have to admit it, Rafa's stronger on clay and proved he can be a very tough opponent on hard courts as well so ... let's see what's next. Grass is our home but in the north-america summer campaign we'll
