high-class match against Gasquet

15.06.2006 | Tennis

Roger had to work rather hard before edging out France's Richard Gasquet 7-6 (9), 6-7(9) and 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals in Halle. After this match on a very high level Roger will next play the winner of the encounter between Marat Safin (RUS) und Olivier Rochus (BEL).

"After a performance like this, Paris is history. It is unbelievable how well Roger plays on grass. He's fit for Wimbledon," Tony Roche praised Roger. Unbeaten on grass since losing in the first round at Wimbledon in 2002, Roger chalked up his 38th consecutive win on the turf.

If he captures the title in Halle, the Wimbledon holder will equal Bjorn's Borg's professional era record of 41 consecutive wins on the surface.
