Roger faces Gasquet in first round

23.06.2006 | Tennis

The draw held Friday at the All England Club pitted Roger against Richard Gasquest in the opening round.

Roger edged Gasquet in the second round last week at Halle, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (7), 6-4, then went on to win the tournament for the fourth year in a row.

If he beats Gasquet again, Roger would break the record of 41 consecutive grass-court victories he shares with Bjorn Borg.

Should Roger win that match, Tim Henman could await him in round two.

A pair of Czechs could be in line for rounds three and four, as Jiri Novak is a potential third foe and 13th-seeded Tomas Berdych could make the round of 16.

Roger's quarterfinal opponent could be seventh-seeded Croat Mario Ancic, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon two years ago. Other seeded players in Roger's quarter of the draw include Germany's Tommy Haas, Tommy Robredo of Spain and France's Gael Monfils.

The other quarter in Roger's half of the draw is headed by fourth-seeded David Nalbandian and also includes eighth-seeded American James Blake, as well as former Grand Slam champions Thomas Johansson, a semifinalist last year at Wimbledon, and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Dear Roger,
I'm sorry the rain spoiled the start of your title defense which went so brilliantly in the 1st set. I can imagine your frustration... At least you got a set in, while others on your side of the draw still have to start from scratch!
I hope

I wonder how many saw the docu with Pete Sampras today during the rain delay. Fascinating to see him play again and to hear his comments about Roger.
Good luck with the continuation of the game, Roger. Looks like this will be the only bad day this week
