Fourth title in Basel

07.11.2010 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger captured a record fourth title in his hometown Basel today, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

"It was a fantastic week, I played well from start to finish. The final was the most dangerous of the week, especially playing Novak. But I was able to pull away in the third set," Roger said.

Both players had the same number of break point chances in the first set, but it was only Roger who managed to convert one of his to take the lead. Djokovic was more opportunistic than Roger in the second and it was soon clear the he was going to tie in sets as Roger just commited too many errors. Very early in the third set, Roger still committed a large number of unforced errors, but this time Djokovic was unable to take advantage. Roger went all the way to treat himself and his home crowd to a record fourth title in Basel.

With his victory in Basel, Roger has now moved past Pete Sampras with 65 career singles titles. Ahead of him are now only John McEnroe (77), Ivan Lendl (94) and Jimmy Connors (109). He will now head to Paris as top seed - as Rafael Nadal will not be playing - for the last event of the ATP season.

Dearest Roger,

Congratulations on your win, especially at home with your whole family watching you, along with Myla and Charlene! A very special, happy moment indeed! According to the commentators this was your ninety third final. What an achievement and what consistency!

Good luck in Paris!

Love,

Sadhana

Hi Roger Many congratulations for the great win in Basel. It must be good to win in your home city. Like an earlier comment, I wonder if its wise to go straight to Paris? Is it not better to rest and then be fresh for the final matches in London at the O2 Centre. I hope to watch you play there but cannot find out which days you play. I have posted a question to you about this and would be very grateful for any info. Otherwise I will end up with tickets when you may not play.

I DON'T THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA FOR ROGER TO PLAY PARIS , HE NEVER DID WELL IN PARIS MASTERS ANYWAY , NOT WORTH OVERPLAYING FOR THE SAKE OF RANKING POINTS , WE DON'T WANT INJURIES AT THE END OF THE SEASON , LIKE IN SHANGHAI 2008 , ESPECIALLY THE BACK WHICH AFFECTED THE SERVE IN AO.

PLUS ROGER GOT THE MATCH PLAY HE NEEDED , AND WON BACK TO BACK TOURNAMENTS , IT'S TIME TO REST NOW , AND COME BACK AT LONDON WITH ALL GUNS BLAZING.

THAT'S MY DOWN TO EARTH HUMBLE PERSONAL OPINION , AND NOTHING ELSE.

RAFA HAS TO LOSE IN THE 1ST ROUND OF A CLAY MASTERS OR THE 1ST ROUND OF RG FOR ROGER TO CLOSE THE GAP , AT THE MOMENT , THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE.
