Match for Africa - a great success!

22.12.2010 | Foundation, Starseite 3

Roger and Rafael Nadal came together in Zurich today for the 'Match for Africa'. The world numbers one and two competed in front of a great crowd in the Hallenstadion in order to raise money for the Roger Federer Foundation.

The two friends showed most entertaining tennis, earning applause and Mexican waves. Roger lost the opening set, but eventually defeated Rafa in his home-match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

A lot more important than the result on court is the fact that with the event a total of 2.5 million Swiss Francs were generated! The money will be used for education projects in Africa supported by the Roger Federer Foundation.

Roger experienced a day full of different activities. He picked up Rafa at the airport in the morning and personally drove him into town. After having lunch together, they made their way to a kids-clinic, various activities with sponsors and eventually the big finale. Tomorrow Rafa will be the host as they will be meeting again the same way in Madrid, this time to support Rafa Nadal's Foundation.

Hi Roger it was a great match and fundraising match last night and well done for your result. Some weeks ago you said to Rafa that you would give him the first set! Did this happen? I think only you and Rafa know really but watching it on my computer showed it to look realistic enough.

I wonder what the result will be in Madrid where it would be great for Rafa to be the winner!! Although in such matches everyone is a winner really.

Wishing a great Christmas to you and your family.

Dear Roger
Thank you for your human idea to realize such a match! Congratulations for win in Zurich! It must have been a wonderful match! Unfortunately, I didn't watch it, but this evening I'll watch you playing in Madrid.
Hope you'll have great fun and I wish you to enjoy the time on the court in Madrid. I know that the result isn't important, but honestly, I prefer you to repeat the yesterday's result and play, of course.
I wish you all the best and good luck dearest Roger
Love Mimi

Thanks Roger and Rafa for an exciting evening (or a very early morning for me at 3.3.0AM) and you finished in perfect time for me to get ready for work. Absolutely terrific to see the two of you working together for people much less fortunate than ourselves. Well Done!
