Roger in third in Toronto

11.08.2006 | Tennis

Roger advanced to the third round in Toronto with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 win over Dmitry Tursunov of Russia. He will now face Xavier Malisse of Belgium, who defeated Thomas Johansson of Sweden 7-6 (7), 6-3.

Roger rolled his right ankle in a hard fall against Tursunov but said he was uninjured. "It was definitely a tough match against a guy who has become confident," Roger said. "I was happy the way I closed out the third set because it was really getting tough in the second."

Roger has not met Xavier Malisse for four years. Before that period they played each other a total of seven times, Roger winning six of the matches. Malisse has reached two tournament finals this year (Adelaide and Delray Beach) and qualified for the semi-finals in Indianapolis.

Excellent performance last night, especially the final set. Best of luck to RF tonight, the rest of this tournament and in the US Open.

Dear Roger, congratulations on the win. You played some fantastic tennis. Watching you slip and roll over gave me a sinking feeling in the stomach and I'm glad to hear that everything's OK with the ankle. Good luck in the quarters against Malisse.

Me again!

Yes, LOVED your smile after you surprised everyone with your loud expletive (as the commentator described it). What a hoot! What a smile!

Well done Roger great match and you played extremely well. Also I love to see you smile on court as you did during this match. You always look as though you are enjoying it as much as we do. Go for the title now and stop all this talk of Nadal.

Dear Roger,

So glad for you that the fall did not cause any injury. Wow! I was so worried, especially when watching the replay of it. We should all be so grateful that it was just a scare.

I am looking forward to seeing you lift the trophy again.
