Second title in Toronto

14.08.2006 | Tennis

Roger has passed another milestone - clinching his 40th career title and 11th in the Masters Series. He also won his 54th straight match and ninth championship in North America since 2004 by capturing the title of the Rogers Cup for the second time. He rallied past Richard Gasquet 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's final in Toronto.

"I just always believe that I can turn any match around," Roger said. "That's what happened today. I know that once I turn it around, once I would take the lead then it would be very difficult for my opponent. That's what I always tell myself. Maybe it's an illusion sometimes, but it definitely works", he analysed - now standing at 62-4 this season.

Gasquet was bidding to become the first French winner in the tournament's 125-year history. He beat Roger last year in Monte Carlo but has since lost five straight against him, including four this year. Unseeded Gasquet started well by breaking Roger twice to claim the first set. Roger then started the second set 0-40 on serve but came back to hold and break Gasquet in the next game. The world No. 1 soon led 3-0 and held firm.

"I couldn't believe I started the second set so bad," Roger said. "Because that's the key moment of the match. But at the same time by giving yourself a love-40 you can also take away his confidence by coming back in that game and winning that game. Make him start doubting himself like that was maybe his big opportunity."

Gasquet agreed: "I know with Roger, when you have some chances you have to do it".

FINAL FACTS

*       Roger moved into joint second place on the list of all-time ATP Masters Series titles winners (since 1990) when he withstood a blistering opening from Richard Gasquet to win the Rogers Masters 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

*       The ATP World No. 1's 11th career ATP Masters Series shield ties him with Pete Sampras in second place behind Andre Agassi, who owns 17 shields.

*       Roger extended his Masters Series dominance along with Rafael Nadal. The players have now won 13 of the past 15 ATP Masters Series Shields (neither player competed in the two events won by other players since the start of 2005).

*       Roger, who turned 25 Tuesday, has now reached the final in his last 17 tournaments dating back to June 2005 at Halle. That streak is the second-best of the Open Era behind Ivan Lendl's 18 straight finals in 1981-82.

*       Roger becomes the new leader of the US Open Series Lever 2000 Challenge standings.

*       The last time Roger failed to reach a final was at Roland Garros last year when he lost in the semifinals to Rafael Nadal. He has now reached the final of his past seven ATP Masters Series events, winning five shields. He has won nine of the past 13 ATP Masters Series tournaments he has played.

*       In the first set a free-swing Gasquet broke Roger two consecutive times to race to a 5-1 lead as he stunned the World No. 1 with a series of backhand winners.

*       Roger fell behind 0/40 in the first game of the second set but rallied to hold serve and then broke Gasquet for the first time in the next game. Federer saved two more break points at 15/40 in the next game to go ahead 3-0.

*       In the third set the score was level at 2-2 before Roger broke Gasquet twice in succession to break open the match.

*       This Roger is 62-4 on the season, including 7-4 in finals, with all four losses coming to Nadal. He won the 40th title of his career, now sporting a 40-13 record in finals. He has garnered at least seven crowns in each of the past three years - seven in 2003, 11 each in '04, '05 and now seven in 2006.

Roger now journeys to Cincinnati, where he suffered his most recent loss on North American hard courts two years ago in the first round against Dominik Hrbaty.

*       During that streak, he has won nine titles -- the US Open and Tennis Masters Cup in Houston in 2004, Indian Wells, Miami, Cincinnati, and the US Open in 2005 and Indian Wells, Miami and Toronto this year.

*       Roger was playing his first tournament since winning Wimbledon on July 9 and now has a 18-match winning streak. Roger is 84-2 on hard courts over 2005-06, going 50-1 last season and 34-1 thus far this year.

*       He clinched his second Canadian title. In 2004, he captured the Toronto crown over Roddick.  Roger has a career record of 15-3 in this tournament.

*       Gasquet is on a hot streak, winning 15 of his past 18 matches to recover from a 7-13 start to the season.

*       He played his third ATP final of the year - all of them in the past two months. He won both previous finals: capturing the titles at Nottingham in June (d. Bjorkman) and Gstaad in July (d. Lopez).

*       Gasquet was playing in his second ATP Masters Series final. He was runner-up at Hamburg last May to Roger. The last Frenchman to win an ATP Masters Series title was Sebastien Grosjean in 2001 in Paris.

*       This is the sixth final of Gasquet's ATP career. He has won three titles - the two this year and one last year at Nottingham (d. Mirnyi).

A disappointing shocking loss in the 1st set. Fortunately, not complacent and able to turn the game around. Well done , ...lovely strokes and amazed by some of the returned beautiful shots. Congrats Roger Federer.

Congrats Roger on winning your (Rogers) cup. You gave us a scare in the first round. Though Gasquet played really well, it was your unforced error led to that situation more than his game. I am glad that you came out of the hole and won the last two sets
