Roger loses in three sets

27.01.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger was defeated 6-7(3), 5-7 and 4-6 by Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the Australian Open today. Roger struggled to stem Djokovic's aggressive assault, and also had problems with his serve.

Roger was unable to dominate the match and had troubles holding up right from the start. Djokovic won a tense 57-minute first set in a tie-break. Hopes of a comeback for Roger evaporated in the second set when, having fought back from a break down to lead 5-2, he was swept aside by a run of five consecutive games for the Serbian.

Roger was broken once again to 1-2 in the third set, before fighting his way back to 4-4 with a threaded forehand down the line. But unfortunately it was only a brief moment of hope as he went on to save three match-points in the final game and eventually had to admit the defeat.

The loss leaves Roger without one of the four Grand Slam titles for the first time since 2003.

Still a good tournament and some good matches on the way to the semis!!
Sometimes you learn more from a loss than a win. Always remember how much worldwide support there is for you! Your style and record in tennis is historic and would fit in any era of the game. So we all hope you keep the motivation and fitness to play for many years to come to inspire kids to play the game your way.
Good luck in your next tournament champ!!

Roger,

You were not in your best during this Australian Open. Hope that you can see what can be improved in your game and stay ready for the rest of the year. I still believe that you can reclaim the #1 spot. It depends only on you. If you can get it, you will get it.

With respect,
Cesar

Dear Roger
The final without you is not a match worth watching and I hadn't watched it. Therewas one player on the court, playing 'for the country' as he said afterwords. I saw only the highlights! You could have won, I had been watching SF several times! But unfortunately, you couldn't manage it. He played fiercely! But never mind now. I hope you'll have the good season from now on.
I wish you all the best, good health (physical and mental) and better luck!
Go, Roger, goooooo!
Love, Mimi

Thank you for the beautiful tennis Roger, you are so different than all the top players ever.
Good luck for the rest of the season and hope to see you here for long years.

Hughsie, no probs, your posts are always outstanding.
Yes my courtside experience was great, I have not stopped talking about the AO experience and Rogers game since. A real appreciation of his game and "Aura" cannot befully realised, until you see him live. HE IS GRAND.!!!!!
ALL THE BEST ROGER and as I say hope you keep loving the game for a long, long, long, long Time.

Must say, did'nt enjoy the final without Roger in it!!!. However, Novak played a great match and a great tournament. He has improved his game immensley and is a little more grown up and "warming" to the public, which is bearable. I am saddened for Andy Murray as i hoped he would gain his first M Title, would be good for the sport, it was not meant to be.
Roger I wish you all the best for the Year and hope you continue to enjoy the game of tennis for a long time yet, so we can keep watching you!
