Roger out in quarters

15.04.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger dropped out of the Monte Carlo Masters after a 4-6, 4-6 defeat against Jürgen Melzer (ATP 9) in the quarter-finals today.

“He did well and played aggressive. He didn't give me many chances,” Roger said. “I didn't think I played terrible. It's the first week of play [on clay] so I didn't expect to play my best. It's been a solid tournament.”

Melzer had to be treated due to back problems after the first game. But he came out strong, pushing Roger into defense again and again, causing our champ to make a total of 24 unforced errors throughout the one hour 44 minute contest, not being able to convert any of the 7 break-points. The Austrian, in turn, took his two break point opportunities with gusto.

Roger will get back onto court in the beginning of May in Spain, where he will participate in the Mutua Madrileña Masters.

Mertzie2, I agree 100% with what you said about Nadal's on court persona and "eccentricities" before serving, which is why I dislike watching him. One TV commentator once said he should get rid of those "habits". Which is why we Roger fans like watching Roger for his elegance and grace, win or lose. A wise man had written : "it matters not whether you win or lose, but HOW you played the game."

I am afraid the game is too physical for our hero. He is getting pushed aroud the court by the bigger hitters and I do not think you will ever see a one handed BH in the top 5 anymore. It is a new era and Roger cannot compete. It will be sad now if he keeps playing.

Thanks all for your helpful comments. In the beginning of 2010, many predicted a year with 4 different Grand Slam winners. Obviously, that did not happen. It, however, could happen this year:

AO: Djokovic
FO: Nadal
WB: Roger
US: Del Potro (Murray?)

In any case, I would be tremendously happy to see Roger winning another major, especially WB.

As for the Olympic Gold Medal and/or Davis Cup at some point, it would be icing on the cake.

I just hope he can improve his current form.

*Fedelegant & *Nochweiterroger & Heartofthematter,
Olympic Gold a long shot may be true. I pointed that out to make my point that Roger nowadays is working on long term goals rather than quick wins and that not winning everything is easily digested when you look at those long term goals. It hurts every time I watch Roger losing a match, but not by long as much as watching him lose the Wimbledon final in 2008. And Olympics are a funny thing: not allways the dead favourite takes the Gold medal :-)
