Roger battles through

05.05.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger battled to get through to the third round of the Madrid Open as he eben had to save a match point to defeat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (13), 6-7(1), 7-6(7).

"I got a bit lucky tonight. I had my chances early on, so it would have really been a tough loss," Roger said. "It was a tough match. I guess it will help me for the French Open, I did spend three hours on clay."

The two players were on court for almost three hours as Roger served 25 aces - his highest ever mark outside a grand slam event. Roger captured the first set of a very levelled match 15-13, did not manage to hold up in the second as he was beaten 1-7 and eventually came through 9-7 in the final set.

Roger will meet Xavier Malisse (ATP 49) in the next match on Thursday.

Maestro, he was determined to change your head-to-head statistics, but you were determined not to be blasted out of Madrid [despite Spanish fans granting him total support].
You are such an inspiration! You played very well and persisted right through the final match point!!! Stay with that focus through to the end of the tournament! Bravo, Phoenix!

**I agree with those who protested and detested the crowd behaviour at the "fabolous Caja Magica"! It was built, after all, for Nadal, but that mass ugliness should be stopped by the umpire! It is not atmosphere to play a match in, and it does make a difference. No matter where, this kind of behaviour is wrong, and ignorant. We saw it a few years ago, at indoor match, against Blake and Berdych, yet Berdych was painted the bad guy. They can't and shouldn't get away with this kind of thing! !!!!!!

Bravo, Roger! You played against a player who was all fired up, hoping to get his first win, and basing it mostly on a lefty serve. You kept your cool, served amazingly, and rose to the occasion to get to win the match. Madrid wesite claims that according to Murry and Schiavone "sex" before matches is good. I contest that! Too much relaxation of the nervous system: more edge is needed. Keep on, Roger, I loved to see you play! Boys will be boys, but the real champion is clearly you! And the Best,

Congratulations, Roger. That was a nailbiting match. I agree with Dutchlady. Lopez played probably the best match he ever played. But you were better. Good luck on the next. Keep the aces coming!!!!
