Roger battles through

05.05.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger battled to get through to the third round of the Madrid Open as he eben had to save a match point to defeat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (13), 6-7(1), 7-6(7).

"I got a bit lucky tonight. I had my chances early on, so it would have really been a tough loss," Roger said. "It was a tough match. I guess it will help me for the French Open, I did spend three hours on clay."

The two players were on court for almost three hours as Roger served 25 aces - his highest ever mark outside a grand slam event. Roger captured the first set of a very levelled match 15-13, did not manage to hold up in the second as he was beaten 1-7 and eventually came through 9-7 in the final set.

Roger will meet Xavier Malisse (ATP 49) in the next match on Thursday.

it's the best that i've seen roger play in a long time. serving outrageously well and hitting the ball with some real venom. an epic match.

Hi brave knight,It was really breathtaking just to read in the forum the messages of every one, who followed your match on tv. I don't want to think what could have happen with my heart if I saw this match live. So I'm really relieved that you came through at the end.

Congrats for beaten the fist Spaniard in this tournament! Up to the next one.
But first take some rest, and enjoy this epic win.

I'm so proud of you and love to see you live in AHOy next year.

All the best,

Congratulations Roger!! Sounds like it was a Battle. You are match hardy now and hopefully full of confidence now to take 'EM ALL ON'. And it sounds like a real fight, and yep Roger is a fighter-(contrary to some people's belief), you don't have 16 Grand Slams etc etc to your name without being a REAL FIGHTING CHAMPION.
ALL THE BEST against Xavier-he can be tricky.
Cheers XX

What a match. I was scared, but my lion-hearted champion came through. Lopez was amazing, and the crowd was all on his side, but you showed that you were mentally stronger than him in the end.
I hope today's match is easier on you, and us!!! Good luck, darling Roger.

I was a bit (lot) scared!
What a match. Both players played really well. I knew Lopez could be dangerous.
When I saw the final score, I thought "Roger must not have played very well". But I was wrong. It's Lopez who was very strong. No doubt many players would have lost against him.
Good job Roger. Hope you won't be too tired to face Malisse this afternoon.
