Roger rolls into 3rd round
Roger continued his progress through the draw at Flushing Meadows with a 6-3 6-4 7-5 victory over Tim Henman (ATP 62) on Friday.
He has now won their last five meetings - having lost six of their first seven encounters.
Roger won the opening set in just 39 minutes. He broke twice in the second set before Henman finally came to life, breaking the defending champion for the first and only time before Roger closed out. The third set was much closer as the Briton began to advance in to the net and put some confidence in his trademark volleys. But Tim Henman was having no joy on the Roger serve, and the world number one managed to crank up the pressure to break at 5-5 before closing out the match.
"I thought it was a solid match because I didn't give him any chances on my own service games and that's what I wanted to do from the start," said Roger.
He will face either American Vince Spadea or Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden in the third round.
