Roger cruises through

11.05.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger defeated France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-2 today to book a spot in the next round in Rome.

Roger secured an early break in the first set and had no trouble bringing it home 6-4 after 43 minutes, even though Tsonga had two chances to re-break. In the second set Roger saved seven of the seven break points he faced as he came up with great serves when necessary. After 83 minutes, Roger used his second match ball to win the match 6-4, 6-2.

Our champ will now play Richard Gasquet (ATP 16) on Thursday.  The two have met nine times before and Roger is leading the head-to-head 8-1.

The extra time off will benefit him. But interested to see if Gasquet is a one-match wonder or if he will play with the same energy tomorrow and saturday (if he wins). If not, then he's a seller in my books and a waste of talent.

Roger will win another grandslam.........That there is no doubt in my mind.

oh roger. i hate to say this but i guess its about the age. its natural to lose against younger players. they are now more active and much tougher i guess. but i hope you could still win another grandslam before you retire.

I am shocked. How can Rogi be one set up and only needing one more game to win the second 6:2 and then still lose the match? .... an easy straight sets win, that is what it should have been. I can only think he has a problem which he is not admitting to, back?, shoulder? Thought I saw him freeing off his shoulder last time I saw him play. Losing is one thing, but to lose when the match is sewn up?!

It is increasingly becoming a heat ache supporting you, Roger. Just when we think you have it under control you let go. i'm tempted to side with ZSOT122. You once had the flair which distinguished you from the rest but now....whew....where is it Roger, where is it. I cripple anytime you lose.

Only good thing about the result is that you'll have more time off then the remaining top 10 players, before Roland Garros. And best you break down Gasquet's forehand in the next match and hit to the backhand side when the space is there for a winner / unreturnable. That's what Nadal always does and he always beats him. You were a bit stubborn with the strategy today constantly hitting to his backhand especially when it was not getting you ahead in the point and you could see that he was solid.

Dearest Roger!
It was a really tough match, very close. A couple of points decided everything. What a shame ! You've played very solid , just bad luck.
But you will be fine , you will stay positive as you allways do.

Good luck for FO .

Alina.

Dear Rog, huge fan of yours, you made me like this game again, but now I have to say, you better hang up the racket for a while, would help you and your fans. Come back strong to Wimbledon, skip Paris!!!
