Semi-final against Tommy Haas

05.01.2006 | Tennis

Roger has reached the semis in Doha without dropping a set, setting up a semi-final against Germany's Tommy Haas. He did so after showing Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis the exit with a 6-4 6-3 win at the Qatar Open on Thursday.

Roger has won his first tournament of the year in three of the past four years (Sydney 2002, Australian Open 2004 and Doha 2005) and looks on track to improve on that record in the Middle East.

He broke the Cypriot for a 5-4 lead and after wasting three set points in the next game, he clinched the opening set on his fourth attempt. Baghdatis dropped his serve again in the eighth game of the second and that was enough for Roger to book his place in the last four.

The semi-final against Tommy Haas (ATP 45) will be their sixth encounter. Roger leads the head-to-head against the former world number 2 with 3:2. Roger took home the last match, the semi-final in Halle in June 2005, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
