Roger defeated in final

05.06.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger was defeated 5-7, 6-7, 7-5 and 1-6 by Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open today.

"It was an exceptional performance by Rafa. He's beaten me again. I'm sad but I am happy to play him," Roger said. "He is the best player on clay but I am proud of the way I have played over the last two weeks but I couldn't do enough against him. It was important to get into another grand slam final."

Roger started strong, breaking Nadal in the second game and taking a 5-2 lead. But it was just when Roger was serving for the set that Nadal found his rhythm and won the following five games to take the first set. The Spaniard continued to play almost without errors into the second set, but Roger managed to hold onto his service games and then break to level 4-4 - only to be broken again in return. Play was suspended for a few minutes due to rain - with Roger coming back onto the court to break Nadal and bring the set into a tie-break - which Roger unfortunately clearly lost.
Roger seemed to change his game in the third set and was at his best at 5-5 to go on and book the set onto his account. He continued well into the fourth set and had several break-points, but it was Nadal who made use of the chances he was given and left no doubt that he wanted the match to come to an end.

Roger will now open the grass court season this week at the tournament in Halle (GER).

You were an inch away from winning the first set, literally! That drop shot would be impossible for Nadal to get to and it was JUST out! That would of changed the game. GOOD JOB ON TAKING DJOKOVIC OUT, I'm glad it was you who ended his streak!

Roger, You were closer this year.. I think the guy is just right, We ,instead of us being dissapointed that you didn't win, we should look at the bright side that you were CLOSER in the 1st & the 2nd set...
I just don't agree that French Open is not yours. IT IS YOURS.
Despite losing your mental strength you still won great points.. you used your brain during the toughest moments.
So Next tournaments will bring more success.
I Beliefe in case you win wimbledon & u'll wing the French Open2012

It was really bad luck.Federer missed many net points with many unforced errors. Actually Federer had an easy chance to win the first three sets.but tough luck.if he could bring the same in Wimbledon, sure he can win him in straight sets...come on Mr.Goat

Roger, it seems to me your losses against Rafa down to two factors: the break points and your level dropping after the first set (or Rafa's increasing). You seem far too casual on the break points and Rafa plays them like the lives of his entire family is on the line. You must match his intensity in these moments. Also, you seem to get tired as the match progresses. Have you thought about hiring a conditioning coach from boxing or MMA? You would be much stronger and more consistent. Good Luck.

Hi RAO, nice to meet u too...
ruans said " if nadal manages to beat federer at wimbledon then it would detract from his aura "...and that's what i wasn't agree with, nothing and "NO ONE" will detract anything from federer.

Dear Roger,

You play very well in this tournament, especially in the semi-final.

Have some rest, you deserve it.

Best of luck at Wimbledon.

Roger played one of his best clay seasons so far but reality is, competition is huge and you need a bit of luck. If Roger makes that dropshot at setpoint (only one cm or less) who knows what happens? But that is tennis and Nadal was at his very best as well. Rogers current level is very promising for his favorite surface.
