Roger defeated in final

05.06.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger was defeated 5-7, 6-7, 7-5 and 1-6 by Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open today.

"It was an exceptional performance by Rafa. He's beaten me again. I'm sad but I am happy to play him," Roger said. "He is the best player on clay but I am proud of the way I have played over the last two weeks but I couldn't do enough against him. It was important to get into another grand slam final."

Roger started strong, breaking Nadal in the second game and taking a 5-2 lead. But it was just when Roger was serving for the set that Nadal found his rhythm and won the following five games to take the first set. The Spaniard continued to play almost without errors into the second set, but Roger managed to hold onto his service games and then break to level 4-4 - only to be broken again in return. Play was suspended for a few minutes due to rain - with Roger coming back onto the court to break Nadal and bring the set into a tie-break - which Roger unfortunately clearly lost.

Roger seemed to change his game in the third set and was at his best at 5-5 to go on and book the set onto his account. He continued well into the fourth set and had several break-points, but it was Nadal who made use of the chances he was given and left no doubt that he wanted the match to come to an end.

Roger will now open the grass court season this week at the tournament in Halle (GER).

It was sad that you lost, Roger! But I'm proud of you!

that the victory or the defeat was on Roger's hands, and that nadal will depend on what roger does. When being at break point, please Roger do for the point, if you miss it, no problem and you'll make the other think "ufff, he has missed it", but don't be too passive cause then you'll lose the point and cheer up the opponent. Last year everyone said Roger needed a coach, I think he now needs someone who can cheer him up, make him believe that he is still the greatest player. Maybe a psycologist

was 15-30 I felt nadal could break, but when being 0-30 or 15-40 at nadal's serve, i thought it would be very difficult. I think Roger thought that too, and that's why he suffered to convert break points. He feels much more anxious than just before and make him missed the point or play too defensively. Roger needs to believe in himself, believe that he can break at any time and go for it don't wait the other to miss the point. I liked what he said at the MC finals, that he wanted nadal to feel

anywhere. Too nervous against novak and too many mental breaks against nadal. It's the second time in a GS this year that with a 5-2 lead, he finally looses the set. Why? Because of nerves and anxiety. That first set should have been for Roger, but when he missed that drop-shot for less than a finger, he like of came down and didn't believe he could win. HE made many recoveries in 2nd and 3rd set, but then loss faith again. As HENRYLEUNG said, nadal did only 2 more breaks, but everytime Roger

Great RG, unfortunate not to win it at the end. Roger proved he has still the will and determination and skills to win more GS, just a bit of luck would make the difference. I liked the way he played, the way he stayed into the match even though the result, the way he fought, his movement has increased, his shots are more powerful.... Magnificent victory at semis, and well played final. I just miss one single thing: a strong mentality. Roger needs to really believe that he can beat anyone

If the 1st set had gone to Roger the match would be very different. Clearly, Roger was too anxious when serving to take the set at 5-3. Roger was serving very well and in that 9th game there wasn't a single first serve in. This loss was very though to take. I was really sad after the match was over, so I can imagine what Roger felt... Good luck for Wimby!

Overall, I am happy for Roger's game and level. As he said, he is still competitive and he showed it at FO. I hope Roger has a good draw at Wimbledon and of course win!

Like Roger and many fans here, I was disappointed for the loss. I think we must accept that Nadal played a very good defence tennis and was more consistent than our Roger. Roger did show many brilliant tennis, which were impressive, but it is impossible for him (in fact any player) to play at such a high level for the entire match. I noted that Roger's game is too easy to be broken if there is such a chance to Nadal. On the contrary, it is hard for Roger to break Nadal's game.
