Roger with a strong start

21.06.2011 | Starseite 2, Tennis

Roger has made a strong start into this year's tournament in Wimbledon with a 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mikhail Kukushkinof of Kazakhstan.

"I thought I struggled putting enough returns into play in the first set but I thought he played very well and made it hard for me," Roger said. "He served well but I served very well myself. It was actually quite tricky on one end, very windy, which made it difficult to time the ball well but overall I'm pleased with my performance."

Roger's serve worked very well and helped him through the opening set. He still had to play strong to go all the way into the tie-brek which he clearly dominated 7-2 to take the set. Roger managed to hold an early break in the second set as he fought off break-points a bit later on. The last set seemed easy as he even seemed to test out a few things for the further matches at his favourite tournament.

Roger will meet the winner of the match between Adrian Mannarino and Conor Niland on Thursday. He has never played against either of the players.

Beloved Champion Roger:
Congrats. on winning the 1st round in high style. I love that your play was described in one of the articles as "AMAZING GRACE".. effortless power and masterclass...you are all those things Champ. Your walk on court clad in white gave me chills and brought tears of joy to my eyes because we missed you so much. You looked royal and exuded power and confidence. Best of luck with the leftie Mannarino, wishing you smooth sailing thru that one.

Luv u

Great start Champ! The way you said "I won my first match and six more to go" tells me that you really are on a mission here and eagerly waiting for that Championship point to arrive and win it. When you are that focused I'm pretty sure you'll get it. Now that you got through your first match, you can play more freely. That's right! Take one at a time. Every opponent is different here. Do not bother about other quarter/half (The results there could be misleading). Just focus on your game only.

Good first round match Roger, all the best for tomorrow against Mannarino, who looked a bit tricky at Queens, so hope you come through in straights again - at least you're playing on Centre so weather won't affect your match. GO ROGER GO!! xxx
