German Open

16.05.2004 | Tennis

The main rehearsal for Paris has been a full success for Roger, taking the title in Hamburg! Eight days before the French Open he has proved that he belongs to the very first class on sand as well. He beat last year’s winner Guillermo Coria brilliantly in the Masters-Series-Tournament in Hamburg after some difficulties at first, 4:6, 6:4, 6:2, 6:3. ‘Coria had excellent footwork and read my shots very well. Furthermore his two-handed backhand was difficult to handle’ said Roger. He, in turn, did not play with the same precision he had shown earlier against Hewitt – hitting the balls out by several meters. But Roger fought back and found his game again. ‘I have now gathered a lot of experience in big games. Thanks to this I go into a final a lot more relaxed and don’t get nervous anymore when I am not leading.’ Roger had already proved this in Dubai in the final against Feliciano Lopez. For the fourth time this year Roger has made it to the final of an ATP tournament. After a superb victory against Lleyton Hewitt Roger will be playing last year’s winner, Argentina’s Guillermo Coria. Roger showed brilliant tennis and managed to place his shots with stunning precision. Often there was hardly enough space for a sheet of paper between the line and the landing point of the ball. His 6:0, 6:4 victory over Hewitt was certainly also a form of making up for the Davis Cup encounter in Melbourne last year.
