Roger cruises through

Roger defeated Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the US Open today.

 

"The first and second set could've gone either way," Roger said after the match. "He was dominating more of the baseline rallies. I didn't think I was serving particularly well during that period. I knew I had work to do on my serve. I think the wind was tricky. It took some adjustments but I took the right ones and thought it was a very high-quality match."

 

Roger started well, only encountering a major problem at the end of the second set as he got broken in the last game off a big Cilic forehand that Roger couldn't get back.

With Cilic facing a break point while serving at 4-4 in the third set, he was warned by the chair umpire for a time violation. Cilic immediately double-faulted, giving Roger a 5-4 lead. In the fourth set Roger used his first match ball to win the match after 2:40 hours.

Our champ will now play Juan Monaco (ATP 36) in the next round.

Hey Rog, well done against Marin - awesome first set, scary second, okay third and good fourth one! Hope I'm imagining restricted movement out on both wings and am expecting too much at this stage of the tourney. Prepare well for your next match against Monaco, he's a battler. keep on roger...great win...but against tsonga...instead of dat backhand slice use dat flat powerful backhand so he cant manages d inside out snots dat r giving u real threats...

Wonderful job yesterday, Roger! I was watching very closely courtside, and worried slightly whether your back was not feeling well as you several times pressed on it or stretched it out in between games. TV did not pick up on it but then in your presser you mentioned how impt it is that a champion is able to come through on days when he is not feeling his best. If that was the case for you yesterday then I am doubly grateful for the very beautiful tennis you gave us! See you Monday!

Congratulations Roger on a great win! It sounds as if the wind was tricky but you found a way to serve in such conditions. I was very nervous during the third set especially at 4-4 but your concentration and determination were very high. These are key area in which to mmaintain focus. It was also good that the umpire gave Cilic a time warning and this needs to happen more often! If the player then double faults then so be it!
