Roger cruises through

03.09.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger defeated Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the US Open today.

"The first and second set could've gone either way," Roger said after the match. "He was dominating more of the baseline rallies. I didn't think I was serving particularly well during that period. I knew I had work to do on my serve. I think the wind was tricky. It took some adjustments but I took the right ones and thought it was a very high-quality match."

Roger started well, only encountering a major problem at the end of the second set as he got broken in the last game off a big Cilic forehand that Roger couldn't get back.

With Cilic facing a break point while serving at 4-4 in the third set, he was warned by the chair umpire for a time violation. Cilic immediately double-faulted, giving Roger a 5-4 lead. In the fourth set Roger used his first match ball to win the match after 2:40 hours.

Our champ will now play Juan Monaco (ATP 36) in the next round.

i think roger showed the much needed patience and discipline on the court yesterday which has been missing for some time now especially in the later stages of third set to till the end by not hitting any careless shots in the name of winners and getting into rallies until he finds his rhythm back .i hope he continues to play this way for the rest of the tournament. i also feel this is the best match he played so far this year.thank you for delighting us on more time

All the great champions can win the match by the good form easily, but only the greatest one can find the way to do adjustments during the match even though it doesn't go their way well on that day, so yes, Roger just showed the whole world what the true champion means.

Well done, Roger, good luck for the next round against Juan Monaco.

Yes, your serve went off a bit, but good match. I thought the warning to Cilic was a bit unfair and you got lucky at that point, but you deserved to win and were pretty solid and a brilliant match to watch. Greg Rusedski was unnecessarily negative about it as was Marcus whatever his name is, tedious Sky anchorman. Everyone should read Nadal's 'autobiography'. What a miserable life - he's been bullied by Uncle Toni since the age of 5. Felt sorry for him for once.

I loved your 27-shots-ralley with your short-cross-backhand-winner!

Now you qualified for BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS for the 10TH consecutive year. Congratulations!
This gives me hope: you might be wanting to equalise Ivan Lendl in 2013 or to break his record? I'm sure YOU CAN, I hope you wish so!

So see you on court up to the end of 2014!!!!! youpeee? I keep dreaming...
