Roger defeated in 5 sets

Roger had to end his quest for another US Open title with a 7-6(9), 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 5-7 defeat against Novak Djokovic in the semi-final today.

 

Roger had a tough day as it is only the second time in a total of 184 matches that he has been beaten after leading by two sets. The loss means he will finish a season without a grand slam title for the first time since 2002.

Everything looked perfect in the beginning as Roger booked the first two sets and was playing really well. It was in the two following two sets that Djokovic raised his level of play while Roger did not quite keep up. Roger got everything back together in the final set, taking it to 40-15 on his serve at 5-3. But an incredibly hard forehand from the Serb and one of Roger's balls just barely touching the net and sailing into the out kept him from clinching the victory. Djokovic went sailing through and secured the win after over four hours of play.

Dear Roger the Great,

I am very sad about your semifinal loss, this is heart breaking. But you are so great Roger, success will come. Your hard work will pay off as you said in the press conference. I so much admire your positive attitude.

Wish you all the best for Davis Cup. Love you Roger, love you very much. People all over the world love you. Your deserve everything.

Champion really painful see you losing like this when you had the joker in your hand.I'm sure you fell like all of us that this one is one of your biggest defeat .But you are THe greatest of all time by several definitions just don't take it to deep inside you can still finish the season as number 2 in the world and next year go to number one for another record breaking

I can't explain why Djo still had confidence at match point to make the "shot" but after that shot, it is clear that his confidence and belief overwhelmed Roger.
I hope that though Roger appears to be satisfied with his play level, he should not be compliacent. There are many lessons to learn from Djo who has now overcome Nadal, to learn to strengthen the mental spirit, to learn to reduce errors, to learn to move quicker, to return better etc.

It's really a tough year for Roger, 2 sets lead in both Wim and US but lost in the end. We all see that Roger played at high level but somehow it was not fully paid off. Luck certainly plays an important role, including the draws and the "shot" at first match point and we must accept that.
I like the evaluation by Nadal after his loss as he attributed it to mental issue. It goes hand in hand with confidence and the belief which in turn reflected in performance, particularly at critical moment.

I really hope that Roger got to read this because what he wrote is so true.

If it wasn't for Federer, Roddick would have had 5 or 6 grand slam titles. If it wan't for Nadal, Federer would have had at least 20 grand slam titles by now. And if it wasn't for Djokovic, Nadal would have more grand slam titles too. Tennis is like this cycle and that's why it is so intense and interesting. Some day soon, somebody will stop Djokovic from collecting grand slams. It usually works like that. Having said all that, I hope Federer picks up one more grand slam before he retires.

Rog, I was so upset the day you lost, I could not talk to anyone.
All because I'm your fan and I don't like Djokovich and Nadal. You are much better player and allow them to win.
How do you figure out how to loose to them? Your performence at US Open was great except the game with match points and after.
Rog, be a man, don't let them win against you, don't give up.
Good luck in that season and also next ones.

Good to see you looking so happy down in Oz Roger. Think it's just what you need to put the US semi behind you - being part of a team instead of carrying the whole burden of a match on your racquet. All the very best to Team Suisse and hope Stan's leg holds up! Hope you wipe the court with Lleytons gang. xxxx

1-Hello my love, how are you? Congratulations for a wonderful tournament you really played amazing! Your game is on a great place and only moving forward, don't be sad, there are many great things on the horizon the season is far from over and you have the whole next season to win a slam, it's all right, let go and stay with all the many positives.

It was so wonderful really magical to see you play in such a beautiful way the whole tournament.
