Defeat in doubles

Despite a good start, Roger and Stan were defeated 6-2, 4-6, 2-6, 6-7(5) in Sydney by Australia's Hewitt / Guccione in doubles today.

Switzerland will need a Sunday win from Roger against 18-year-old Bernard Tomic (ATP 59) in order to keep hopes of Davis Cup promotion alive. Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 19) will play against Lleyton Hewitt (ATP 199).

Shame about the doubles. You two are such a good team normally, but you have had such little time to practise together and get used to the surface, let alone the time difference out there, that it does generate problems. Interesting matches coming up, and ones which you both have to win! Tomic should be no problem to Roger, although he is a promising young player. Hard match for Stan with Lleyton. Good luck to you both and to the Swiss team. ALLEZ!!!
