Fifth title in Basel

06.11.2011 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger captured a record fifth title in his hometown Basel today, defeating Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-3.

"It's great to win at home again," said Roger. "Kei put up a good fight,. I've known ever since I hit with him as a teenager that he could have a good future. He's had some injuries but he's playing well now. It was a good match and I'm very happy for the win."

Nishikori started strong on his own serve but Roger broke with three winners. He then dropped just one point in the opening set. Roger also raced through the second set and though Nishikori had come from a set down against Djokovic, our champ did not give him a chance of a comeback. He closed the match with his first matchball after one hour and 22 minutes.

Roger will now head to Paris for the last event of the ATP season -  the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy. After one week off, the ATP finals in London will end this year's season.

Dear Rog, Again Heartiest Congradultions!!!!. It was a very emotional and special win for you in your own home town Basel. You have won so many trophys, but am sure this is one of your favorites, also Wimbledon. Enjoy your victory. Take care.

Aggressive with F/H, hitting that BH of yours with depth AND looking to attack--all a joy to watch.Basel can be proud.
This household has been watching Kei Nishikori for a number of years--wonderful to see him back playing well again--lets hope that his injuries are in the past and that he goes on to achieve great things with his tennis. Agile around that court . Interesting he has already commenced doing charity work--lesson from his hero Roger Federer?.
Kindest regards

Hello Roger
What a wonderful finals match to watch between 2 humble and very good tennis players--no long periods spent bouncing balls, no chest thumping, MTOs etc
Heartiest congratulations on a wonderful win --you played an excellent week of tennis particularly 1st set against Stan. It is wonderful to see you using the forecourt much more frequently. And as for those smashes--superb. You used to smash overheads quite frequently earlier on your career--nice to see you doing them again
