Federer charges to fifth Basel title (ABC Online)

Roger Federer has returned to winning mode 10 months after his last title, as the home tennis hero schooled Japanese wild card Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-3 to win a fifth Swiss Indoors title in Basel. The third seed lost just one point on serve in a dominating first set which lasted 28 minutes. The 21-year-old Nishikori found some range in the second set but had no hopes against an on-form Federer at the event where he once served as a ballboy.  "It was a perfect match for me. Now I have big hopes for Paris and London," said Federer, whose eyes moistened as he held the trophy to a standing ovation from "his" crowd after ending his longest title drought since 2002. "It's great to win at home again," he said.

Roger Federer is aiming to end the year on a high after ending a 10-month title drought at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Federer, who beat surprise finalist Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-3 to win his home event for a fifth time, has rediscovered his title-winning form at an opportune time with his rivals all struggling with fitness. Federer will be looking to take full advantage in Paris this week, and the 16-time grand slam champion believes he is in the best shape he has been for a long time. "It's been a long time since I felt so good physically," Federer said. "I'm feeling ready and fit and fired up, that's how it's supposed to be. This is the last push of the season and I'm ready for it."

Roger Federer picked up a fifth title at his Swiss Indoors home tournament on Sunday, hammering Japanese wild card Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-3. The world number four Swiss has appeared in eight of a dozen Basel finals including the last six in succession. He now owns 68 career ATP titles but claimed his last one 10 long months ago when he won Doha in the first week of January.
