Roger makes winning start
Roger defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (ATP 6) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the opening match of the ATP World Tour Finals today.
“He served fantastic, it was really hard to control the rallies from the baseline,” Roger said. “I’m happy to get off to a good start.”
Roger showed a strong performance in the first set, overpowering Tsonga and taking the set in 21 minutes thanks to two breaks. Tsonga's tactic to take quite some risk in the second set worked out well - it was the Frenchman who booked two breaks to level in sets.
In the final set, the two showed brilliant tennis and held serve until Tsonga fell back 0:40 in his final service game. Roger won the match with a backhand passing shot on his second match point to reach victory nr. 60 of the season.
On Tuesday, Roger will meet the winner of today's match between Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish.
