Out against Rafa

Roger suffered a 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-7(5), 4-6 loss against Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the Australian Open today. It was an incredibly intense match, offering the spectators a true tennis-spectacle. 

Roger started perfectly into duel no. 27 with Nadal, breaking the Spaniard in his first service game. But and only a few sloppy points at 4-2 gave Nadal enough room to find back into the set. But Roger managed to take the first tiebreak only a bit later. In the second set, Roger lost his rhythm, giving Nadal plenty of room for a total of three breaks. Our champ then saved a set point in the 11th game of the third set, eventually forcing a tiebreaker. After three unforced errors on Roger's side, Nadal clinched the set on his last of five set points. In set number four, an early break on Nadal's side was enough for him to seal his victory after 3:42 hours.

 

"I thought Rafa played well from start to finish," Roger said. "It was a tough match physically as well. I'm disappointed, but it's only the beginning of the season. I'm feeling all right, so it's OK."

Djok crushes Rafa; Rafa crushes Fed; Fed CAN beat Djok. Somewhere within this construct, Fed is bound to win his 17th GS title. But he will need some assistance from the rest of the draw, unfortunately. As for Djok and Rafa, they will physically annihilate one another on court for many years to come, and in so doing, likely mathematically prevent one another from ever getting to Fed's record. :)

hi roger! it's frustrating that you lost again to nadal. why not be like djokovic, he has this supreme mental toughness, as seen in the 5th set of his final against nadal. nadal was leading 4-2 and yet djokovic rose to the occasion and level the game at 4-4. how about the US open semi, you were 2 sets up and yet djokovic was able to win the game.
you need this mental toughness when facing nadal. you have the tennis records and experience but all these evaporate when you face nadal.

Oh, correction. I believe back in 2008, Roger did face Djokovic in the USO semi-final. But of course that one was Djokovic version 1 (pre-2011).

The main problem, of course, is Nadal. Terrible match up in terms of style of play for Roger.

Nearly impossible to think Roger can win 3 sets against Nadal. Sad, but true.

*** BELIEVE1 *** is right.

We, Roger fans, should leave our delusions behind and see the reality.

In the last 8 Grand Slams, Roger has been to only 1 final (French Open 2011).

In the last 4 Grand Slams that Roger won (AO 2010, WB 2009, FO 2009, USO 2008), he did not face Nadal or Djokovic.

Realistically, for Roger to win another Grand Slam, Djokovic and Nadal (especially Nadal) have to be eliminated by other players.

The only thing that matters is mental strength and being able to let go of all negative feelings, as if you always are playing the 1st set.

Interestingly, Djokovic is using this method (most probably without knowing it) and see how effective it is.

You have the skills and shots; all you need now is the mentality of winning and letting go of fear.

Why does Djoke succeed vs. Nadal where Roger doesn't these days? Djoke is taller, bigger wingspan, is physically stronger, plays with a large racquet, and has a double backhand. Nadal's out wide serve and high bounce are countered by these. Both Djoke and Nadal are more consistent, less error prone than Roger.

For an older Roger to beat either of these much younger fools, he must overcome physics, increase power with a new racquet, and eliminate unforced errors.

Boting, I don't know why you are saying that Nadal and Djokovic are a mountain too high. Nadal was lucky beating Federer, and is a fact. Federer can beat easily both "rock" like he did in WTF, and don't tell me that is another thing because it doesn't, everyone wants to win that. Nadal dominated Federer? NO, he didn't, his games shows that he can beat Nadal, and I think he has more 50% to win against Djokovic.

Hello All! Well, I'm EXHAUSTED after watching on & off the AO final. I'm also sad. Tennis like that looks like big table ping-pong. It's boring & pure KOs & survival of the fittest. Undoubtedly RN & ND are fit & hungry for more titles which is wonderful, but I don't think they'll last. What's the point in play like that? It's predictable, lacks style, its ugly. I'm not fit to survive watching this kind of stuff. I'll watch Roger & cheer him on regardles of the result. TE AMAMOS, GO ROGER!
