Rough start for Switzerland

10.02.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger lost his first match of the Davis Cup rubber against America's John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 2-6 today. The USA took a 2-0 lead in their World Group first-round tie as Stanislas Warinka also lost his match against Mardy Fish earlier in the afternoon.

Roger had a great start and only lost four points on his own serve. But Isner started to turn things around in the second set, when he increased the pressure enormously. Roger had little answer to his opponent's excellent serve, and the crowd of 7'000 people in Fribourg was stunned into silence at Roger's first loss in Davis Cup singles in eight years.

Roger and Stan are due to face Mike Bryan and Ryan Harrison in Saturday's doubles. The match starts at 2.30 pm.

I knew Isner would be tough, but after drifting off to sleep and then awaking, I certainly didnt expect the score to be what it was. I did a double take and still not convinced of the loss, I read the story. Oh well...Lets try again. I was happy for Mardy Fish, I've always had a soft spot for the Fish. Maybe Americans can play on the clay....You think?

To Federer for Wimbledon

Roger isn't going to hang any racquet. Why do you have to bring him down with all you negativity. The clay was too high bouncing which suited the Americans instead of the Swiss. It was a mistake by the Swiss Tennis Federation. Isner is a dangerous play on any surface. Roger might had problems with his back.

Bad luck Roger. I wasn't able to watch the match but Isner won only a handful of points more than you in the entire match. Another classic example of the small margins in sports. Best of luck for the rest of the tie.

Grand Master Federer,

Always remember: what can be improved and perfected?
You're simply ROGER FEDERER, and you know the answer!

Stan you were robbed! Hopefully the doubles gold medalists can at least win that rubber. Wasn't able to watch it live so I hope the comments about Rogers back aren't true. Agreed about the clay comments, why not indoor hard? The Swiss can turn this around or at least win two rubbers, we wouldn't want a whitewash now! All the best for Rotterdam Rog! Pleeeaaasssseee win the dubs tomorrow! P.s it's only Davis Cup....

Sorry Stan & Roger!! Hopefully you can turn this around and win, no matter what still a Federista!!! Hopefully Roger's back is ok!!!
Your greatest fan from the USA!!

OK Swiss powers-that-be - whose idea was it to play on a fast indoor high-bouncing clay court that actually favoured the opposition??? Are you mad???? The court cut up as well, resulting in unpredictable bounces that does not favour a high-finesse precision game such as Fed has. I'm so angry!!!!!!! Added to which I'm not convinced that Roger's back was okay as he wasn't covering the court that well. Wish I hadn't watched the match to be honest. Still love you Roger tho. xxx
