Roger started his quest for a second Rotterdam title with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

"After having lost my last matches against Rafael Nadal and John Isner, every win is currrently a good win. It is great to try to defend the title here after seven years."

Roger, who is playing in the event for the first time since winning it in 2005, has now already booked a spot in the quarter finals as Mikhail Youzhny - his next opponent - cannot compete due to a foot injury. He will now play Jarkko Nieminen on Friday.

I shall be watching Rog play lovely Jarkko tomorrow and cheering him on as always but will be slightly split in my allegiance as the Shark is such a nice guy! Many thanks Roger, for the autograph you gave my son Thomas!! We watched your training session from nearby at kids day in Rotterdam...
He is so proud and it was a great pleasure to see you practice and play at such a close distance against Mahut. Your game is truly amazing, first time we saw it for real, and a great inspiration to us recreational tennis players!

The best of luck in the coming matches and the rest of this great tennis year to come, mostly for the Olympics London..
