Roger battles into final
18.02.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1
Roger had to go through a thrilling battle against Nikolay Davydenko today to beat the Russian 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and book a spot in the Rotterdam final.
Roger had a rough start and looked on the brink in the final set as Davydenko first gave away a 3-1 lead and Roger then had to fight off 3 more break points. Luckily for Roger, it was not Davydenko's day in terms of seizing opportunities, and Roger came back to break to love and then serve out for a place in the final against Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday.

Like a terrier you never let loose and tried to disrupt Nikolai's rythm. I have to say that he didn't give you much chance to do so, because he came up with incredible legs and strokes all the time. So this was a very good win for you. You won't have had much rest, unlike your younger opponent today, but I feel confident that you will give it your all today. I will be there to support you, together with countless other fans. I wish you all the very best for the match.

No matter what comms may have said or has been written: you fought like a lion and created many chances throughout the whole match. It is true that you missed a couple of shots and good chances to break, but on the other hand that is also credit to Nikolai who put so much pressure on you (not to mention the whole stadium of course ;-)). Roger, we all know there have been matches where you started well and and ended up losing. In this one you really had to dig it out.
Your webteam chose the exact right words: you battled into the final. I must admit that watching Nikolai Davydenko finding back to his former self again was scary and made me worried about the outcome of the match, but you hang in there, tried to break through his armour and finally succeeded. I must admit that things looked very bad for you in the 2nd set, but just when everybody started to think what to do on Sunday afternoon when not watching you in the final you made the break.
Best wishes.
