15th victory in series

Roger won his first indoor tournament match in almost a year at the Madrid Masters. He defeated the Olympic gold-medalist Nicolas Massu 6-3 and 6-2, taking home his 15th match in series.

 

It is is Roger's first indoor victory on the ATP tour since a five-set loss to Nalbandian in the Masters Cup final last November. "It's always nice to beat the Olympic champion," Roger said. "I think I played the big points better than he did. This is a good surface for my game, and it's a perfect result for the first round."

 

Roger's round-of-16 opponent will either be Robin Soderling or former No 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero - who eliminated our star in the semifinals on his way to the title in 2003. "At that time we were both fighting for Number 1 and he played really well then," Roger said of Ferrero. "I always enjoy playing against him, and any former No. 1."

Hi, my dear Rog, I am so happy for you. It was not easy for you since it is not a natural surface but you played grasiously as usual.

Congrats for winning the 1st match..it's always great to get over the 1st match since it's often the toughest. Anything now is a bonus, so go all the way as usual!

Congratulations on a great start Roger. It was so good to see you again on TV! You were awesome, especially considering it was your first match in the tournament; some of your shots had me gasping.

Just seen a snippet of your game against Massu but guess that will be all I am able to see of this tournament. Leaving Vernet early tomorrow and not home in Windsor until after the weekend. I wish you all the very best and hope I will be toasting you on
