Roger's 80th victory this season

20.10.2006 | Tennis

Roger is right on track for his first Madrid Masters title after defeating American Robby Ginepri 6-3 7-6 in the quarterfinals. He notched up his 80th win of the year in comfortable fashion to set-up a semi-final clash with Argentine David Nalbandian.

Vying to become the first player in the Open era to win 10 titles in three straight years, Roger tied Ivan Lendl's 24-year-old mark of successive 80-win seasons with the victory. "It's great to get another win and it's a sign of the hard work paying off," Roger said. "I'm very proud to have walked off the court 80 times as a winner and only five as a loser. It means a lot to me."

Roger broke Ginepri in the eighth game on his way to taking the first set in 27 minutes. Both players held serve to take the second set to a tiebreaker in which Roger pressured Ginepri into three unforced errors.

Though Roger and Nalbandian have split their previous 12 encounters, the Argentine has only beaten Roger once since 2003 - in last year's Masters Cup final.
